Safety seems elusive with latest shooting

And so another dark day came, when we turned on the television and heard the replays of gunfire, not exactly sure from where and not exactly sure why.

Other customary images followed. The ones we always see. The line of waiting ambulances. The scurrying police, with automatic weapons drawn. The stunned faces and broken voices of the witnesses. Eventually, a somber news conference, where someone gave us the latest body count, but not the reason.

Burj Tower now tallest structure in Middle East, Europe

Under development since the past three years to reach an unspecified height, Dubai's 'Burj Dubai' Tower is now the tallest structure in the Middle East and Europe and at 110 levels it shares the honour of having the largest number of floors, alongside Sears Tower in Chicago. The 380-metre high tower is also the world's ninth tallest building. Burj Dubai is only one metre shorter than the Empire State Building - the second tallest in the US and is on its course to become the world's tallest building.

It is the centerpiece of the US$ 20-billion Downtown Burj Dubai, a mixed-use project in the heart of Dubai featuring residences, commercial space, hospitality projects and several retail outlets including The Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping and entertainment destination. To date, 2,67,426 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and 49,684 tonnes of reinforcing steel have been used in the construction of Burj Dubai.

It takes a hypocrite.

Hillary Clinton (D-NY) is wrong when she says "it takes a village" to raise a child. "I think it's time for us to recognize every child deserves a mother and a father," Romney said. "The statement, however, runs counter to what The Boston Globe quoted him as saying in 1998: 'Hillary Clinton is very much right, it does take a village, and we are a village and we need to work together in a non-skeptical, no-finger-pointing way.'"

UPDATE: We would be loathe not to mention Romney's explanation: "On Monday, Romney's campaign said his Globe comments were about public-private partnerships, not families. Romney was referencing corporations, not parents, the campaign said." April 17, 2007 12:58 pm | Comment (49)

Bill To Limit Petition Drives Moves Through Senate

(CBS4) TALLAHASSEE A bill that would give stores, shopping malls and other businesses the right to prohibit petition signing on their premises is moving through Floridas Senate.Business lobbyists supported the bill as part of an effort to make amending the Florida Constitution more difficult. The most significant step was an amendment voters approved last year requiring that future amendments, whether offered through petition drives, the Legislature or other means, must get 60 percent of the vote rather than a simple majority.Opponents said the measure would deprive citizens of the opportunity to exercise their right to petition government in "quasi-public" places such as malls. Theyre also calling the bill discriminatory because businesses could still allow petition drives they favor. The bill's sponsor, Sen.

Antioch 'Regional commercial power center' in works Village 'will ...

As Great Lakes Principals finishes its retail projects at Deep Lake Road and Route 173, the developer is moving west to work on 70 acres of retail and commercial development.

"We will have more than 1 million square feet of retail space in Antioch after this is done," said Claude LeMere, Antioch's community development director.

"We will be a regional commercial power center. We will have Wal-Mart, Menards, Target, Lowe's, Kohl's and dozens of medium-box stores. Between these developments and the new industrial park on the Pederson farm, we will have 368 acres of new commercial tax base with no impact on the schools," said LeMere, adding that he envisioned this in the early '90s when he first worked for the village. "My job is to bring the retailers here."

The 70 acres are south of Route 173 and east of Route 83.
