Stepping out to help charity
HUNDREDS of charity supporters in Cambridgeshire are getting set for a very special birthday hike - to help people in dire need 3,000 miles away. They will put their best foot forward in six weeks' time for Cambridge's famous Oxfam Walk, one of the city's longestrunning public fundraising extravaganzas. This year is the 40th anniversary of the big event and to celebrate, organisers are staging it in the heart of Cambridge, on Stourbridge Common. Usually it is held outside the city, and in recent years venues have included Wimpole Hall and Chilford Hall at Linton. The money raised will go into Oxfam's Emergencies Fund, which is being used to help people fleeing the crisis in Darfur. Launching the event in Cambridge, Olympic oarsman Kieran West, urged people to sign up and take part on Sunday May 20.

Dining, in brief
Here's a reminder of the restaurants we've covered recently. The most recently published are at the top of the list. Rockland Zzest: A multifaceted Italian restaurant in Suffern that offers something for just about everyone. For traditionalists: veal, chicken or shrimp, prepared in such time-honored styles as picatta, marsala and parmigiano. Or there are more modern and complex dishes, some with Asian influences. Seafood is a particular strong point, ranging from selections from an extensive raw bar that features both Atlantic and Pacific oysters, to yellowfin tuna, expertly poached in olive oil. Wine by the glass at Zzest may be one of the better drink bargains around. They back up the glass with an elegant mini-carafe of wine, so your "glass" of wine is really two or three.
US lobbyist lashes out at Thai policies
''How do you think you will feel if you found out that the bank in which you have a deposit in is siphoning off money from the other accounts that are there in that bank?'' As part of USA for Innovation's efforts to pressure the Thai government, the organisation has sent letters to US President George Bush and other senior cabinet members. Mr Adelman said Thailand was incorrect in saying that compulsory licensing were necessary since the country was not facing an emergency. ''If the country had declared a national emergency ... it would still be understandable. But no such announcement has been made,'' he added. The WTO's agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (Trips) allows compulsory licensing in cases of national emergency, extreme urgency, or public non-commercial use.
