Police alerted vs ‘Akyat-Bahay’ gangs

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Deputy Director General Reynaldo Varilla has ordered additional mobile and foot patrols in posh subdivisions and commercial centers in Metro Manila to foil the efforts of "Akyat-Bahay or burglary" gangs to rob vacant homes over the Holy Week.

Varilla put the 15,000-strong NCRPO on heightened alert and ordered increased checkpoint and police visibility operations at bus terminals within the metropolis to maintain order and prevent petty criminals from preying on province-bound commuters.

He will meet with the NCRPO's five district and 37 station commanders in Camp Bagong Diwa in taguig City at 1 p.m. Monday to fine tune the security preparations for the Holy Week.

Under Operation Plan (Oplan) Semana Santa (Holy Week), the NCRPO will tighten security at churches, posh subdivisions and commercial centers in Metro Manila: "We will be activating our neighborhood watch primarily to thwart attempts by Akyat-Bahay gangmen from striking with impunity."

Under the neighborhood watch, Varilla said the NCRPO will mobilize barangay officials, village associations and security guards to ensure that residences temporarily vacated by their residents are amply guarded: "Those who are leaving their houses should coordinate with the village security guards or their neighbors to keep an eye on their residences to keep criminal elements at bay."

The additional foot and mobile patrols will be deployed to areas where Akyat-Bahay gangs struck during past Holy Week celebrations.

Not a small place, but cozy

BOLINGBROOK -- A thousand trees, a dozen bronze butterflies and stained glass windows are a few of the details that architects put into The Promenade Bolingbrook to create a sense of place.

The shopping center that opens April 26 is designed to be part shopping mecca and part community gathering place.

At 1.1 million square feet with 100 stores and restaurants, Promenade Bolingbrook won't be small.

Anti-Britney: The New Look

The idea came to Chelsea Rippy when she found herself surrounded by low-rise jeans and short shirts. Nicole Thomas thought of it when she was shopping for a wedding dress and found two options: strapless or frumpy. Tedd Doucette got the idea when he and his wife couldn't find any clothes they considered appropriate for their five daughters.

Suffolk looks to bail out flooded house

Since then, they have rented it out - until last year, when continued flooding forced a tenant out. McDonnell blames the problem on a county pump station that poured hundreds of thousands of gallons into the county's Great Bog Park. She also said county planning studies dating back to 1986 indicated awareness of problems and recommended county purchase of adjoining lands.

"We are looking at a real face and a real person whose entire life savings are in jeopardy," said Legis. Lynn Nowick (R-St. James). "This should be our top priority."

Legis. Vivian Vilora Fisher (D-Setauket) also released a letter signed by dozen county lawmakers - eight Democrats and four Republicans - addressed to all 10 town supervisors asking them to tighten controls on building in areas prone to flooding.
