Condo, retail development proposed for Bel Air Shopping Center
PASCAGOULA -- City planners have approved a special use permit for a Southfield, Mich.-based company that wants to build a condominium complex, mixed with commercial and retail, in the abandoned Belair Shopping Center. The City Council will discuss the project, which was ap-proved by the planning board April 4, at its Tuesday meeting. Doug Bock, a representative with 21st Century Mississippi LLC, a subsidiary of Arco Construction, said Friday that a tentative site plan is still being developed that would incorporate about 200 stacked condo units, ranging from $110,000 to $150,000, plus commercial and retail spaces on the 13.5-acre property. Bock said the firm has specialized in renewing obsolete properties since the 1950s. The company has been researching the Mississippi Gulf Coast region for about 10 months and settled on Pas-cagoula for its proposal, Bock said.

Chron: Freeway gunbattle ends in death
One man was killed and at least two were wounded when rival immigrant smuggling gangs engaged in a noontime gunbattle that started on the Southwest Freeway and ended on the feeder road, police said. Authorities suspect one gang was trying to steal a load of immigrants from the other. "It's unknown if it was a 'coyote' operation or a rip of some sort," Sgt. C.E. Elliott of the Houston Police Department's homicide division said. " ... We're still looking at that." Police worked into the evening in an attempt to sort out what happened at the "chaotic" scene, which also ensnared an innocent bystander, left at least one other person critically injured and tied up traffic for hours. It was hardly the city's first smuggling-related violence.
